The 80s and 90s was a fantastic period during the holiday season that some may argue it was far simpler. Back then, the Christmas trees were decorated with a heap of red tinsel and multi coloured fairy lights. Compare that today, where trees are often Instagram perfect with synchronised led light displays.

 Christmas Wish List: Then Vs Now

In the 80s and 90s Christmas toys were a lot different to what they are today. From the Cabbage Patch Kids, Tamagotchi to Pokémon, all these toys topped Santa’s list for many children across Ireland. The game boy was also every young gamer’s dream, or a Nokia 3310 in the early 2000’s was the latest gadget at the time costing €155.00. For families, DVD players were also all the range for the perfect movie night.

Today we see a different wish list, where the price tags are much higher. From the latest iPhone 16 pro costing €1,239.00 and smartwatches to savvy gaming consoles, the gifts have become a lot more advanced and expensive. How we shop has drastically changed too from browsing through the Smyths catalogue to now online store fronts and scrolling through Instagram ad’s, creating an infinitive cycle of temptations that can quickly put strain on our bank accounts.

Christmas has always been about connection, joy, and giving. Whether it’s unwrapping a nostalgic toy from childhood or marvelling at the latest tech, the real gift is the time spent with loved ones. The decorations might be fancier and the gifts pricier, but the magic of the season remains unchanged.
